About This Chapter
The narrator introduces us to a middle-aged man in his class. He's called "amakudari" and he works for the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology. He gets a week to go to a school and do nothing but sit there and relax. The narrator says he's not like other civil servants who get a cushy job after they're done working for the government. He says he doesn't want to do anything for the sake of doing nothing. He has a suggestion for how to make the school a better place: make sure to throw away a piece of garbage on the way there. He thinks this will set a new record for the number of people who can throw garbage away. He also says that this man is the teacher who's victimized the students. He wants to be a student like him. He tells the teacher to talk about the girl he likes. The teacher says he needs to live a proper life. He should be more like the other students in the class. The school chairman is always insulting to the narrator. He decides to wear his school uniform backwards so he can play umpire. He plans to bring a dog to the schoolyard to create a mud ball. He hopes that the teacher will ignore him and let him do this. He adds that he'll beat him to it with the help of amakudari. He asks the teacher if his shoes are ready for the mud ball game. He wonders if he looks like everyone else is going to do the same thing.
