About This Chapter
Chapter 49 opens with a description of the secret code of a hotel. It says, "Die baldy , there are so secret codes written in senseless code ! . . blah blah blah . There are so many secret codes in the world that it's hard to figure out what they're talking about. The narrator points out that the military was looking for a machine that could "crack pretty much anything" that was written in code. He points to a pamphlet on the upcoming digital television transition as an example of a complicated code. The pamphlet says that it will be multicasting, but it doesn't explain how it will work. It also says that if you are too poor to purchase a new TV, then maybe you can decode the signal. This is a complicated contract between a magazine and a writer. The contract says that the contract will not be seen by anyone other than the writer and his friend. This shows that the magazine is making an effort to confuse the reader. They're also trying to put their lives in danger if they don't understand the contract.
