She tells her that she is acting like a " useless coward" and that she will not let her daughter be harmed. The Governess wonders if there is any need for her to go back to Don Pedro's house. She wonders if it is already Christmas Eve and wonders if they are going to open their presents first. She realizes that they are both tired and that they must be happy.
