Mr. Lincheng leaves, and the Governess is worried about him. The Governess calls in the new maid, Madame Meung, and tells her that she is still alive and that she will not hurt her grandfather unless he dies. She also tells Madame Manette that she wants to make up with her grandfather, but she can't because she's still young. She tells her to go out with her, as long as she doesn't leave the house. Madame Menette says that she'll take her back after she finishes her studies, and Madame Manettes says that it looks like he's found an excuse for her in front of her friends.
