This chapter opens with a flashback to the beginning of the novel, when the narrator is still in the hospital. He is now in the care of the doctor, who is also a member of the Dongfang group. The doctor asks the narrator why he has come to the group, and the narrator tells him that he knows the doctor very well. He also tells the doctor that if he does not want to stay at the hospital any longer, he can go back to the school. He tells the man that he has totally recovered from his illness, and that he wants to leave the hospital and return to his normal life. He says that if the doctor wants him to work, then he can do so, but if he doesn't want him to, then the doctor will have to take away his salary for the year. The narrator says that the doctor has asked him to take everything away from the hospital so that he can return to school, and he says that he will do as the doctor tells him to do. If the doctor refuses to do his work, the bonus for the previous year will be deducted from his salary.
