The next morning, Mingke and Mingjin discuss the situation. He tells Mingke that the manager of the factory has sent an advertisement for a job, and Mingke asks if he can ask the manager directly. The manager says that he is from the factory, and that they would like to talk to Mingke about the job. Mingeke thanks the manager for his kind words, and tells him that the job will start the next day. He says that if Mingke does not come out of his room, he will wait for him at the door until he comes to see him. He wants Mingke to know that he appreciates what he has done for him, but that he has a lot of work to do before he can return to school. He asks the manager to take him to the scene, but the manager refuses to do so, saying it is getting too cold to walk. The two men discuss the fact that Mingke has fallen in love with Mingke, but is destined to be separated from him.
