We learn that Mingke has few relatives left in Hong Kong, and that it is a good time for him to leave. He asks his mother to come live with him for a year, and she refuses, saying that she is strong enough to fend for herself. Mingke tells her that he saw the man on the news two days ago, and he has not been punished yet. He says that he has forgotten how his family broke down, and asks her if she has forgotten what humiliation she suffered when her father died. She says that she has, and accuses Mingke of betraying her. She asks him if he is going to give up on trying to avenge his father, and Mingke replies that he is not going to do so because of his hatred for his father. He does not want to hurt anyone, he says, but he is afraid of losing his mother.
