The scene opens with Mingke and his friend beiming in the middle of a large-scale costume party. Mingke asks if he is going to see his friend, who is also in the same costume as him. He asks if the two of them are mad at each other for not telling each other that they were going to the party. They reply that they are not, and Mingke says that he is the one who always accompanies him to all of the events. He says that Mingke is wearing the same dress that he gave to her as a gift, but that she refused, saying that she wants to become more self-reliant. He tells Mingke that he planned to give her the dress as a present, but Mingke refused and asked someone else to make a dress for her. He adds that he did not even know that she asked for someone to make the dress, and that she did not spend a cent of his money on the dress. The scene ends with a knock at Mingke's door. He is furious that he has been slandered by his friend. He blames Mingke for slandering him in front of Mingke, and he apologizes for his behavior. He promises that he will never pick on Mingke again.
