In this short scene, we are introduced to Miss Betsey and Mr. Lorry, who are waiting in the yard for their husbands return. Miss Lorry is exhausted from her day at work, and she tells her mistress that she has to go to work because she is not feeling well. She asks Lorry if he is short on cash, and Lorry tells her that he has no limit on the amount of money he can give her. He then asks her if she has a problem with him being at her house at night. She tells him that she does not know if the child is a boy or girl, and that every time she goes out with him, he is so good-looking that she feels insecure. She then tells him about her pregnancy, and he tells her to swallow her fears and go change clothes with him. She does so, and they leave the house.
