This chapter begins with a discussion of auras, or spiritual energy fields emitted by a person's body. It is important to note that auras are not necessarily the same thing as physical energy fields. For example, auras can be a spiritual field, a presence, or a distinctive atmosphere. The narrator notes that the bag and the outfit are not in any way connected with each other, but that chiyuki's aura is "just her aura alone, but she is not conveying the Parisian student concept" .
