The Volscians are celebrating the collapse of the wall and the surrender of the city by the wall-titans, when gabi shows up. He tells them that he was taken into the internment camp because his blood test showed that his mother was having an affair. He says that the man who trained him in martial arts wanted him to return to the marleyans so that he would be able to enjoy a better life than his mother had. He also says that even if he returned to the Marleyans, he would find nothing but a corpse. They're rounding up all of them, he says, because they've been plotting together to escape. He's going to help Jean out if he can, but he's also thinking about eren and Ani, who might be back on the island. He thinks that maybe his mother should stay on the upside, and maybe he'll help her out.
