In this chapter, we learn that the Volscians have sent messengers to all of the major walled cities of the area to see if they have seen a group of ten or more giant beings. This would mean that they have already seen the beginning of the conquest of the forest by the new world's beings, and that they will soon be joined by these new beings as well. We learn that this is the last village that the North team will ever live in, because the forest has been cut off from the rest of the world, and the game has become harder to catch. The North team wonders why the forest is being cut off, and why it has been so hard for them to catch a game. He wonders why they have been taught to live in the forest, and he wonders if they would throw their lives away for the sake of this new world. He asks if she would throw her life away for this new place, and she says that she would, if it were not for the fact that she and her kin live in this forest. She then asks if he would throw his life away if it meant that other people could live there. He says that he would, but that the forest and its facin' other people are so tough for him that he thinks it is an "abnormal" that they would have to leave the forest. He then asks why he keeps running when everyone else is running, and wonders if he has a reason to be a soldier. He tells her that she should talk to him in
