In this chapter, we learn about the survey corps, a group of soldiers who go outside the wall to fight against the alien invaders. We learn that they're not afraid of death, and that they don't have weapons, but they still have to fight to the death. We also learn that this is the first time that a human has met a giant, and it's hard to believe that a giant would speak to a human being in such a way as to not mistake it for another creature. We're also told that the giant asked the soldier why he's eating them, and the soldier doesn't understand why the giant would want to eat him.
