About This Chapter
It's too late, Shmoop says, for the rest of us to see what's really going on. He's been warning us all along, and now he's finally realized it: the humans are going to eat the humans. The only way to stop it is to kill the kid. Shmo says he'll be dead by the time he dies, and that's not even counting the time that the other humans will be eating him. He begs her to kill him, but she doesn't seem to want to do it. She's worried that she's going to have a baby girl, and she wonders why she hasn't been able to get rid of the baby girl. She also wonders if she has a devil in her, and wonders if her father covered up the whole thing for her. She wonders if it's possible that she has devils in her because she was so young when she was born, and if she'll have to go back to her old life now that she isn't a baby. She says she'd like to fight it if she can, but Shmo reminds her that she was just feeding her eight-year-old daughter to a dog years ago, and Shmo wonders if the dog will even look at her now. She tells Shmo that he should appreciate fighting it if he can, because it'll make Shmo feel alive again, and he wonders if Shmo wakes up every day feeling that he might die. He says Shmo's right, that feeling is the "natural state" for living things, and his sons have learned to watch their dogs tear their sister apart, which is why Shmo
