In the basement of Shmiganshina, the two men discuss the situation. They've locked the gate to the district because of a disagreement about who gets to receive the injection. Everyone's been captured except for Bertram, who's still alive. The two men agree that they'll accept punishment if anyone tells them anything. Bertram tells the men that he's the one who chose them, and they're not going to let him die. He also tells them that they don't need to worry about the future because he'll be there to take care of them. He tells them to squeeze the wall between the two districts so the fire doesn't spread too far. He'll also show them what's inside the fortress, which he says is just a bunch of medical books. He explains that he and his father have been keeping this secret for a long time, and now they want to show the world what they've been up to. He shows them the labels on the books, which are labeled "medicines" and "books" for the inside of the fortress. He says that if the labels were accurate, they'd be just medical books, but if they were false, it's because they were treated to keep bugs away from the books. When he asks how they know that there are no humans outside of the walls, erwin says that they can't travel outside the walls because there's a subjective intent to keep people from believing that there is no human outside. The only way he can apologize to reiner is to apologize directly to him. On one side of the wall is a message that says, "humanity not perished" .
