The narrator tells us that he's not really sure what to make of the situation. He's worried about what to do now that the war is over. He doesn't know how to get out of it, he says, and he can't figure out how to do it without the help of his friends. He wants to join them in the fight, but he knows that they're not going to help him. He asks if they'll join him in the war, but they won't. He says he'll just like the street where he used to live, but then he'd have to go back to his job as a teacher. The narrator says that he can only hope that his friends are the best at what they do. He also says that if they don't join him, then he will never be able to do what he does. He tells the narrator to stop trying to make a pact with the other students, and to stop being a jerk to them, because he has his hands full with the war right now. He adds that he wants a jerk like this to be in charge of protecting the world, because it's the only way he can do his job. He wonders if he should think about it, and then he says that someone told him to do so, but that he couldn't think of it. He thinks that if he really cared for everyone, he would have a strong feeling, but if he cared for only one person, he wouldn't be strong enough to do the job. But if he cares for all of them, he has to value them all, and that's just too pre-dictable. He goes on to say that she's glad that she told him about the war because she says that it changes everything.
