In this chapter, the Governess's servant, Rakan, explains how he tricked the Governor's guards into believing that he was Ani's father. He also explains that the Governor General probably knew the identity of Rakan's fake identity all the time. Rakan says that if Ani wants to know the answers to all of her questions, she should come see him. Ani asks Rakan about her son, who she took in as a child during the war, and Rakan tells her that he taught him a lot.
