This chapter opens with a murmuring of sun at what is going on in the other dimension. It's not clear what the murmur is referring to, but the narrator tells us that it's the murmur of a child who's had a bad childhood. The narrator tells the audience that he's prepared this place for the child because he doesn't want anyone to watch him. He says that he can use all his former powers to entertain himself in this new world, but he can't sell his former power to anyone. He tells the child that he likes him, and that he has been miserable since he was born. He also says that the child is serious about the fight, and he'll lose if he tries to protect her with his ordinary strength. He's going to have to choose between his sword and his "happiness" .
