About This Chapter
When the lieutenant arrives, he is surprised to find that the fire brigade has not responded to any calls for help. He is also surprised to see that the officers of other companies are also present at the scene, and that they are unperturbed by the situation. The lieutenant tells the lieutenant that he has noticed that the soldiers of his company are so lame that they do not have the strength to fight an actual fire. He also tells him that the company does not have any soldiers who are clumsy enough to fight a real fire, and therefore does not need to rely on the bunk beds that are common in other companies. He then informs the lieutenant of the five victims who have gone to their deaths in the previous fire, which he believes to be an act of God. He asks the lieutenant if there is anything he can do to stop it, and the lieutenant replies that he will put the remaining four victims to rest, and then he will go after the bug that was planted in one of the soldiers.
