In this chapter, the reader is introduced to a new character, who is introduced as the "Fire Soldier" from the previous chapter. This new character is the same person who was present at the "Rookie Games" at the beginning of this chapter. The Fire Soldier tells the new character that he has known him for 12 years, and that he was the one who saved the boy. The new character asks the old one why he did not tell him more about the incident, and the old fire-fighter tells him that it was a fluke that he survived. He tells the young man that the boy has been kindled into a flame inside him, and his body is a "mass of heat energy" that burns the weak to death. The young man tells the old man that he cannot tell the truth to the people who have been affected by the incident because he cannot afford to do so.
