In this chapter, the reader is introduced to a new character, Captain Hibana. He is a member of company 5, which is on the front lines of the Great Fire of Darnay. He has been researching the cause of the Darnay Fire and has come to the conclusion that human despair is the fuel for the fire. He believes that hope will be the fire extinguisher for Darnay's company. He tells the reader that he is in outer space and that he does not wish to return to the earth.
