The chapter opens with a description of the battle that has just taken place in the Nether. A group of soldiers has been sent to the Nether to find out what's going on there. One of the soldiers, named Shinra Kusakabe, is shocked to find that the other soldiers are all wearing insect-like appendages. He's also shocked to learn that the legs on the soldiers are made of a substance called ommatidia, or "swooper eyes" , which are made up of thousands of tiny strands of light-sensitive material . Shinra says that he's the one they're looking for, and he'll help them get back to the battlefield as soon as he can. He explains that he has been testing his hypothesis that fusing human beings with insects will bring humans closer to the insects of adolla. He also explains that the extra legs on his body are the result of his research into the human-bug relationship.
