In this chapter, Akitaru, a captain of the special fire force, explains that the current catastrophe is the result of "people's despair" and that he and his men have the means to stop it. He urges everyone to not give up hope. He says that even though the entire world is now on fire, there are still "people out there" who have not given up hope of survival. He tells the reader that the end of evolution is extinction. The end of human evolution is the wish for death, he says, because the human is merely carried along by society, religion, or government. The only thing that humans have in common is that they worship "the collective unconscious" of the multitude of "insubstantial opinions" on social media
