About This Chapter
The train is on its way tokyo, and the captain of the fire brigade asks the captain what he's doing there. The captain says he wants to work in a new fire cathedral, which is right above a nunnery. He says he'd rather work in an elite company than in a place where he'll be seen as a punk. He tells the captain that he doesn't care what anyone says about him, he just wants to be "a hero" . He's not a detective, he says, but he wants "to be a hero" because he was the one who held the new recruit's hand at the fire station when the new guy came to join the brigade. He also says that the captain shouldn't stoop to violence, because the captain is not thinking of the sort of violence that would be appropriate for a man who's just trying to put out a fire. Captain obi says that they're not there for training. They're here to meet people who die for a variety of reasons, including old age, suicide, illness, and spontaneous human combustion. First and foremost, it's their mission to save "human kind" from the "fear of the flames," he says. They can't control a third-generation fire soldier, but they can control a "third generation fire soldier" who has the power to "light his own fire" and has "complete mastery over it," the captain says. He adds that he made his mom promise that he wouldn't take a "dangerous boy like him," and he promises to keep it.
