Captain obi says that they're not there for training. They're here to meet people who die for a variety of reasons, including old age, suicide, illness, and spontaneous human combustion. First and foremost, it's their mission to save "human kind" from the "fear of the flames," he says. They can't control a third-generation fire soldier, but they can control a "third generation fire soldier" who has the power to "light his own fire" and has "complete mastery over it," the captain says. He adds that he made his mom promise that he wouldn't take a "dangerous boy like him," and he promises to keep it.
