The chapter opens with a description of the "sought-after shrine of awakening" and the "hour of ordeals" that await a man who overcomes these trials. Arthur asks Merlin what is going on, and Merlin tells him that there is a great "cataclysm" going on. Arthur says that he has to face the "Chamber of Good and Evil" in order to become a knight. Merlin asks if he is prepared to see the room, and Arthur replies that he is. He then asks if there is any way to set up a trial, but Merlin says that it is a "special mintendo" that explains everything. Arthur tells Merlin that he failed to complete the trial because he was an inexperienced and unskilled youth, and that he was unable to defeat the "dragon king dracon" because he did not have the best equipment. He wonders if Merlin could use some of his magic spells to help him defeat the dragon king, since he has so much equipment, and wonders if he could use a single move that would help him survive attacks from the phony dragon king.
