The next morning, the captain of company 5 leaves to go to dinner with his men, and the narrator muses that he has fallen in love with one of them. He wonders why they don't all have dinner together, and wonders if they're all in on the secret of the cathedral's "special fire" . He also wonders why company 8 isn't having dinner with them, since they've been helping them out with a drill. The narrator wonders if company 5 is just an "auxiliary" company, and that company 5's leader, Haijima, is a part of the conspiracy to destroy the cathedral. He asks the narrator why he changed his mind about the war, and why he's so cynical about the whole thing. He says that the soldiers have shown him the light of shin ra, and he wants to know why they changed their minds about fighting evil with evil. He tells the narrator that company 8's main objective is to find out what's going on in the prison of flames. He adds that he heard that the other companies are trying to figure out the cause of human beings' strange reactions to the fire. He swears he'll find out who's out there, and burn their corpses alive.
