About This Chapter
It's been a long time since we've seen the narrator, but he's back. He's in the middle of a conversation with the narrator's sister. The two of them are talking about the nun's altar, which they think might have some sort of entrance to the convent. The nun tells the narrator that the altar is called an offering altar, and that she's not allowed to enter the convent without permission from the nuns. She also tells him that he can't light a candle under the altar, because it's too hot. The narrator wonders if the nun is giving him orders, and wonders if he'll be able to move the altar. He asks the nun if he can light a flame, and the nun says that's impossible, because the altar doesn't have a thermo acoustic pen that can do that. He wonders if there's anything he can do to light a fire, and he wonders if she'll give him orders to do it. The nuns wonder if the fire was an accident, and they wonder why the stairs leading under the ground aren't connected to the fire. They also wonder if there are any clues about the convent's history, like the books on plants and insects that the nuns have in their library. They wonder if they're supposed to be doing experiments on plants, or if the nuns were tricked into doing so by the nuns' doppelgangers. They're not sure what the experiments entailed, but they wonder if it was just a boring library, like a cook book, or something else.
