The chapter opens with a soliloquy about the connection between Nemo's discovery and the attack on Torano Castle. Nemo is now aware of the dangers posed by the white hoods, and he is determined to return to the fire service. He asks his daughter to stay away from her father, but she refuses, saying that she wants to go back to the company where she was born. Nemo tells her that he has found the bodies of all the soldiers who have died in the battle, and that he hopes that she will find Nemo in order to help him search for his missing son. He is grateful that he did not lose any of the young men in the fire force, because without them, he says, they would have been wiped out. He says that he believes in his daughter's abilities, but worries that she is not like him.
