About This Chapter
In this chapter, we learn more about Asakusa's battle with the white-clad goons. First, asakusa asks the captain of the company if he's a demon or a bastard. The captain replies that he is not a normal "infernal" being, but a "corpse" or "doppelganger" . He says that he feels like his doppelgangers are trying to take his place in the battle, but he doesn't know if that's true or not. He tells the captain that he heard the captain say that a doppel-ganger is like a bunch of "occult mumbo jumbo" , but that apparently, when you meet one, you die or you get killed . So the captain says he'll look into the possibility of a "Doppel-Ganger." The captain says that they can't "just brush off" his story as "obstacle-mumbo jumbo," but that they'll have to start looking into the "corpses" themselves. He also says that the captain dodged a bullet from one of the goons because he taught him about the "breath of life." He then says that if he were to fight the white goons, he'd be able to do it, too, but how could he do it? The captain tells him to get all his company's "freshmen" to learn how to fight, and he promises to become stronger in the next day. He's not going to be a "samurai knight" anymore, he says, because he wants to be "a samurai knight." He wants to become a "man of the world."
