About This Chapter
Back at the hotel, Captain Donnithorne thanks Kerana for saving him from the flames. He says that if he hadn't done so, she would have been dead, too. He tells her that it's better to blame someone else than it is to blame yourself. He's referring to the fact that she's grieving for a loved one who's been killed, and she doesn't know how to cope with the grief. He also says that he used to think that it was everyone's fault, but now that he's back in the room, he realizes that there's more to it than meets the eye. He thinks that someone in company 1 is making a big deal about the fire, and that's why they're trying to get him out of the room. When he gets back in, he finds that he forgot to bring lunch with him, so he bought some ramen bread instead. He tries to figure out what's going on, but he can't figure out a way to get out of this mess. He asks to be taken out for a walk, and when he gets there, he sees that everyone is in a good mood. They're having a good time, he says, because they've all been growing up together. He wants to make sure that they don't get too close to each other, because he knows that obi's got a plan for them soon enough. He warns them not to look at each other's faces too much, because that'll make them look like cowards. Then he tells them that a nearby bakery has just opened a new cake with berries on it, and they should get out ASAP.
