About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a description of the fire that has broken out in Tokyo. The narrator tells us that it is the end of all things, and that the gods are punishing humankind for its sins. He says that the fire is like the day in the past when mankind incurred wrath from the stars and the world burned. The sun god was punishing us for our sins, he says, and the fire consumed the land that humanity lived on, the words that they spoke and the cultures that they built up. He asks where they should send the civilians, and he wonders if the path that Rekka wanted to see is now the path he believed in. He wonders if they stopped the white-clad goons' plot, and wonders if there is anywhere safe on the whole planet. He also asks if they could have stopped the great catastrophe, if they had seen the arrow, and if no one had come out of the front door. He concludes that the worlds have been assimilated by madness, passivity, wrath, and destructivity. He feels that there is no hope in this world, because everything is doomed to destruction, from the moment it is created. He tells us not to panic, because it is too late, the world is all over.
