The scene opens with a tap on the door of the apartment where Lin is staying. Lin's father is calling him, and he curses the fact that Lin can't marry his daughter-in- law. He wonders how Lin is doing, and wonders if he's going out for a drink. He's also worried about what's happened to his girlfriend, who has fallen in love with a rich guy. He asks her to give him a surprise, and she says she'll do it next time she's in town. She's not sure what to do with the money, since it's so much more than she bargained for, but she decides to give it to Lin anyway.
