In this chapter, Fukushima and his friends discuss the importance of learning to speak in English. First, he tells them that they need to learn to not be embarrassed when speaking in their native language. He then proceeds to tell them that it's okay to be embarrassed if you're learning a language other than your own. He tells them to ask for help from an English speaker and an artist if they want to learn English together. He says that he's happy that they've gotten to live with a shell turtle, but he'd really like to learn from her. He also says that if he hears one word of English and another word of Japanese, he'll have to strip off his clothes to avoid being embarrassed. He doesn't know how to explain this to the girls, but they're confused. He's also confused by the turtle, who's just fallen asleep. He thinks that the turtle must be worn out from all the fuss over the hedgehogs song. He wonders if the turtle wishes that she could sing the song herself, but that she'll be satisfied with one that's shelley's satisfied with. The girls are confused by his confusion, and he asks them what's going on. They tell him that they were staring at the turtle when she was sleeping earlier, and that he was staring at her when he was naked earlier. He asks if this is weird, and they both agree that it is.
