In this short scene, Dostoevsky gives us a glimpse into his mind as he contemplates the events of the previous day. He tells us that he has no idea where he is going or what he is doing, and that he is in total despair. He asks where his bass is, and is told that it is in his closet upstairs. He then asks if he is a friend of Yassan, and if he would have come back sooner if he had not been so depressed. He says that he will give him back the money he bought the bass for, but that he does not want to be a part of a band, since they only started the band because he wanted to be with her, and they do not have any other reason to continue
