The story begins with the death of the principal duan. Old wang had requested that old duan go to the "sinful" city to investigate. Old duan refused, but he got acute kidney failure after he was drugged with chicken. He was promoted to captain and joined the forensic department. Before old wang's death, he warned duan not to pursue the case. Old Duan drank the drug and saw his family's hallucinations and an "eye filled with malice". He decided to consult Ming Ma on this and the two agreed that they would meet several days after the incident. The chapter ends with the interrogation of Jason. Jason returns this chapter and tells the story of how he saw the hallucinations. He says that the hallucinations were the first time he had seen hallucinations like this. Ming Ma says that this is nothing unusual, but that he can't understand why Jason would see such hallucinations. She suggests that Jason take a vacation, but Jason says that he is intrigued by the other thing Jason told him. He kept vomiting and said his stomach was "full of cockroaches" until he vomited blood. The captain asks how Jason's internal organs became like this, and Jason replies that it was not stomach acid, but "impaired police mechanism". Jason tells the captain that he needs his help two days later, when he has a girl who is suffering from the same issue.
