About This Chapter
In this short story, we are introduced to Shylock's niece, Evie, who is suffering from "squeezing" , a psychological disorder in which a child loses her ability to distinguish between sound and smell. Evie's mother, Nelly, is also suffering from this disorder, and she has come to the psychiatrist's office to seek help for her daughter. The psychiatrist tells Nelly that she needs to lead her daughter out of her "trauma" as soon as she can, and that Evie needs to be allowed to play outside more frequently. The doctor then gives Evie a business card, which she can use to contact him in the event of an emergency.
