In this short story, we learn that Little Em'ly has seduced her grandfather's son, and that she has also seduced her own grandmother. We learn that both of these women are "rotten to the core" and that neither is any better than the other. We also learn that the grandfather is a "pedant" who "serves him right" . The grandfather tells his granddaughter that she should prepare herself for the worst. He tells her that her misfortune is caused by her pet chinchilla, and she should get rid of it immediately.
