About This Chapter
The narrator tells the girls that leather and fur are becoming more popular in the winter. He tells them that the price of the leather is so high that they can't even afford it. The girls are shocked, and the narrator tells them to go back to the store and get the price lowered. He also tells them about the homeless people who live in the area. The narrator says that he'll be at the store as fast as he can, and that he doesn't know that there are homeless people in the neighborhood. He asks the girls if they're afraid of driving themselves, and they tell him that they aren't. He then asks if she's afraid of working as a mechanic, and she tells him that she is. He says that she has been pretending all the time that she'll never be able to afford a car, and he tells her to enjoy the abalone she has never eaten before. He reminds her that he heard a man say that skin is the best pelt because it's smooth and delicate.
