The counter detects a neutron, which is the most dangerous form of radiation. It is a subatomic particle that has a half-life of 10 minutes. The only way to stop it is to use materials that block the rays, such as steel and lead. The other students, however, are thankful that the life of a neutron is only 15 minutes.
