The monk asks Cai Ming-liang why he's in purgatory. Cai tells him that someone asked him to send word to the warden, and that's why Cai is there. He also tells the monk that he promised to go back to China after his sister's death, but that he doesn't want to leave because the gates of purgatory will open. Cai Ming asks if the warden has any unfulfilled wishes, and the monk replies that it's not his business whether or not he wants to leave purgatory. The monk then tells Cai that his sister-in-law, who died in childbirth, couldn't leave the agreement she made with Cai before she died, so Cai Ming wants to see her. He tells her that she's the one who was killed by the people from hell, and he asks her to take him to the grave of her dead husband. She says she'll do it, and then she runs off
