The next morning, Mr. Dupuis wakes up and tells his son that he's feeling better. He's glad to see his son, because he was worried that his son's reaction to the news of his father's death would make him want to kill him. The two men talk about how they were wrong to want to inherit so quickly, and how they're glad that they didn't kill their father first. The old man says that he plans to host a party the next day to thank all the visitors who came to see him while he was sick. He asks his son to come as well, and the old man promises to do so. The next day, he says, he'll have a private party to thank everyone for coming to visit him. He thanks his son for his help, and says that if it weren't for him, his grandfather would have died. He also says that his daughter's birthday is tomorrow, and that's a big deal for him.
