In this chapter, we learn that the person who gave the herb to the monk was trying to make sure that people would only come for the purpose of saving someone. The monk ate the herb so that he would prove that he was willing to sacrifice everything for someone he wanted to save. He gained the monk's approval by eating the herb, and the monk agreed that this was a "test of human nature" and that someone who is willing to "sacrifice himself for others" is a "good person." The monk tells the monk that he will also die if the monk ever uses the herb again, and that he won't harm the monk. He says that he can feel the "power of the drug" rising so fast that he has to use his "soul power" to form a "line of defense" to prevent it from assinuating. He wonders if the herb will blend with his blood vessels, and wonders if he will be able to "pass his soul power" line of defense. He realizes that his brain and eyes are getting more comfortable, and he wonders if his spirit eyes are evolving into the "state of purple demon-eye." He asks the monk if the level he has reached is the "immaterial embodied spiritual level" or the "world of spiritual manifestation." He explains that the next realm he would have to reach is the realm of "spiritual manifestation." If he reaches this level, no one would be his match. He asks if he is "frozen with emotion" and if his mother has suffered injustice because of his actions. He tells his brother that if he refuses to take the herb and leaves
