About This Chapter
In this chapter, we're introduced to a new character, Lieutenant Spenser. He's the guy who wrote the letter to the Governess in Gulliver's Travels, and he's one of the most important characters in the novel. We're told that he'll be the main character of the novel because he is the one who writes the letters to the people in the town of Gulliver. We learn that the town is connected to the rest of the world through the use of the telegraph, which allows people to talk to each other and to communicate with one another. This is a big deal, because it means that people can communicate with each other in ways that they've never been able to do before. We also learn that this is the first time that a person has ever seen a "graffia" tank, a type of armored vehicle that's used by the U.S. Air Force. The narrator speculates that the destruction of this type of vehicle is evidence that the Russians are using the telegraph as a weapon against them.
