About This Chapter
The next morning, the second firing squad gets ready to go to battle. They're excited to get back to work, but they're also worried about their new rifle, which was ripped during their last mission. They don't yet have a new one, so they'll have to wait until someone else takes care of it. Meanwhile, the property manager is complaining about military exercises. He's been told to take the rifles home with him, but he doesn't seem to be having a good time. He says he's probably given half his life to the war, and he'd rather die than be a part of a military exercise. He tells the guy to hurry up and get his new rifle. He also tells him to stop being so serious about the celebration, since it's the end of the war. He asks the guy if he thinks the enemy will show up on the day the cease fire is to be observed. The guy says he thinks they won't show up, but then he remembers that he was told to forget about the part of him that he wasn't supposed to be. He thinks about the fact that the enemy is going to march within the midnight light, so the first gun should be ready. He remembers that a trooper was on top of a tank, and that he'll be marching at full speed. He wants to get the short-range guns ready so they can shoot at the enemy, but the guy says they've already killed a private, a gunner, and a sergeant. He begs the guy not to do this for him, since he was meant to do it for the sake of the people
