The next morning, the Governess arrives at the hospital to visit the corporal. The Governess laments the fact that she has not been able to see her daughter for three days. She says that she will return to the hospital later in the day to retrieve some documents for the Finance Department. She laments that her daughter has not slept or rested for the past few days and that she is going to keel over soon. She is worried about her daughter's well-being, but she is also concerned about her husband's health. She worries that he will die before she can see him. She tells him that her husband would die first if war were declared. She also worries that if her husband dies before she does, she will become a person who will refuse to change.
