About This Chapter
Back at the prison, Oreldo and the other officers are talking trash about the "splash splash" machine, which they believe was used during the Civil War. They're worried that the director of the prison is going to try to use it again, and they're bummed that they can't use it anymore. They joke about the fact that the waterworks are messing with them, and that they've got to hurry up and get the refugees out of the way. Or Eldo tells them that he's the warrant officer, and he was looking down his shirt to see if they were looking for him. He asks for his name, and when he gets it, he takes off. He's worried that she's selling her hair for him, and she already sold it to pay for the habit of her father, who's addicted to morphine. He tells her to stop joking around, and says he'll never sell her too late. The director wants to testify about drug distribution every two weeks, and the officers are worried about him. One day, the director hired a bunch of street kids like them. They didn't even know they were working for the government, so they needed to be "the scissors" . One of the officers asks if they have an "acquainance" in the prison. They don't, but they'll find out soon enough.
