About This Chapter
In this chapter, Dr. Bledsoe delivers a soliloquy on the subject of suicide. He says that he knows that many people are prepared to die, but that he will kill them if they try. He tells Dr. Roberts that he has a family that will take care of him for the rest of his life. He adds that he is happy that he did not kill his own family, because he will live in the care of the family of the one of his victims. He then tells the reader that the cat house was on fire and his wife was still inside. He asks the reader if he can stand a fire, and the reader replies that he cannot. He also tells the story of how he cut off his clothing and used a glug knife to slash his right arm. He wonders if he could use cultured skin to heal the wound. The reader tells him that his throat hurts and he is thirsty, and he asks him what his rank is in the sewers. He replies that his name is Randel Oland and that he works in unit 901.
