He tells the lieutenant that killing the lug will only make the situation worse, since killing him will make it look like he killed the girl. He says that killing him is the only way he'll be able to play the role of the "cold vitter" , the king of the rules, because killing him would only make things worse for the republic. He also says that if the girl had told him how she felt about her father, he would have thought that her only reason for liking the cold vitter was because he killed him.
