About This Chapter
This chapter's epigraph comes from a conversation between a soldier and a civilian. The soldier asks the civilian if he's trying to get himself killed. The man replies that he is, but that he doesn't have a family and that being used as a "offering" was also a "horrid offering" . This is the first time the soldier realizes that the man in the picture isn't really a soldier at all. He's just trying to look good in a picture. The civilian asks if the soldier is trying to kill himself, and the soldier replies that it's a good idea. They'll get the man with a shot gun, and then they'll fill in the navigator's body with a shell. They won't be able to do this without a navigator, because they've all been trained to do the same thing in all terrains. They can't do it without the navigator, and that's why they have to use the sidecar instead of the main vehicle. They don't need a navigator because they have all the training in the world to do it. They just need to get the guy with the navigator with them, and they can do it in a single shot.
