This chapter's epigraph comes from a line in the play's first scene, in which a soldier tells the audience that he's been testing a new type of armored vehicle. The soldier asks the audience to imagine what it would be like to be in the middle of a battle and hear the sound of gunfire. The narrator tells us that it's impossible to imagine the sounds of gunfire coming from the enemy's machine guns.
